The Dragon Boat Festival is a Chinese traditional holiday which is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. We will have 3 days holiday to celebrate this traditional holiday from Jun 8 to Jun 10.
The festival is named after a famous ancient minister and poet, Qu Yuan, who lived more than 2,000 years ago in the Warring States Period. Due to political intrigue and false accusations, he was exiled and then committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.
Legend has it that people tried to save him by rowing boats and throwing rice dumplings (zongzi) into the water to feed the fish, so they wouldn't eat his body. Since then, dragon boat racing and eating zongzi have become important customs of the festival, as well as hanging sweet-smelling herbs and wearing perfume pouches to ward off evil spirits.
During the festival, you can see colorful dragon boats racing on rivers or lakes, with drums and cheers filling the air. You can also taste various types of zongzi, which are glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings, such as pork, beans, and lotus seeds, then wrapped in bamboo leaves and boiled or steamed.
