What is PTFE Tape?

PTFE tape is a simplistic yet highly versatile lubricating material and thread sealant. It is mainly used in ductwork and piping applications and is also known as thread seal tape and plumber's tape.

Much like all types of professional adhesive tapes, it is usually sold pre-cut to a range of specified widths on small rolls or spools. Plumber’s seal tapes sometimes come in a plastic cover or casing, to protect and preserve the adhesive material during toolbox storage.

Benefits of PTFE Tape

Non-stick Performance
It has the minimum surface tension, smooth surface, and does not adhere to any substance in solid materials. All kinds of oil stains, stains or other attachments on the surface are easy to be cleaned. Paste, resin, coating and almost all adhesive substances can be simply removed.

Chemical Resistance
It shows inertia to most chemicals and solvents. It can resist the corrosion of strong acid, strong alkali, aqua regia and various organic solvents.

Non-reactive to other metals
PTFE tape can come in contact with many different chemicals and substances while it works. Things like acids, solvents, and various gasses won’t have an impact on the tape and its ability to perform its job.

Malleable
The tape is filling in the tiny gaps and it needs to be able to do so very carefully. As it gets wrapped around the pipe, it needs to be able to bend easily and not harden. PTFE is the perfect fit as it adheres to the threads without question.

Non-corrosive

These tapes are always non-corrosive. Regardless of the application they are used in, you don’t have to worry about them getting ruined or damaging the threads they are attached to.

Types of PTFE Tapes

At first, when PTFE tapes were made they only came in one color; that was white. After their huge demand in the piping industry, the manufacturers started making them in other colors also. There are six types of PTFE tapes that depend on the color of the tape, function, and density. These characteristics are different for each type of tape and we will discuss them here one by one.

White PTFE tape
White PTFE tape is a single density tape that is used only on NPT thread of 3/8 inches, but it can also be used in low pressured residential waters such as garden hose, taps, cooking gas connections, etc.

Yellow Tape
Yellow tape has a double density and can be used for natural gas fitting or propane/ butane fittings. It is a gas type because it can be screwed and unscrewed anytime without losing its seal.

Pink PTFE
Pink PTFE tape is a triple density one. The tape packaging is red, but the color of the tape itself is pale pink. It works for all the joints of ½ diameter or greater than this. It is also workable for high pressure residential water pipes with an optimum operating temperature of 190° F and a pressure of 150psi.

Green PTFE Tape
Green PTFE tape is an oil free tape that is used for pipes that are supposed to convey oxygen such as medical oxygen cylinders pipes or oxygen welding lines.

Blue Industrial PTFE Tape

Blue Industrial Thread Seal Tape is high quality and specially for industrial pipe.

Gray Stainless Steel Anti-Seize PTFE Tape

Has nickel pigment colour added and recommended for all stainless steep pipe and fittings.

Applications of PTFE Tape
PTFE is widely used in many areas of life from industries to our kitchens. As it is a thread sealant, the main use of it is in the piping industry for sealing piping ducts

How to use PTFE Tape

In order to use PTFE tape to prevent leaks, the part has to be wrapped perfectly. Remember, you are looking for a watertight seal. Proper placement and technique are crucial to achieving leakproof fitting. Furthermore, having to remove the tape and start over can be a waste of time and extremely frustrating for the operator. Especially if there are many fittings to rework.

Make sure you work through this process slowly and diligently in order to get the results you are looking for. The tiniest wrong move can have you trying to peel off the PTFE tape (which seems impossible) and start again.

Step 1: First you will need to hold the fitting or nipple in your left hand and apply the PTFEStep 1 thread seal tape to the male threads. Make sure to hold the tape tightly in place using your thumb while also pulling the tape tight to ensure the tape forms into the threads. You can then start to wrap in the direction of the threads.

Step 2: Now you can start the first wrap. You need to ensure that the tape fully covers the end of the thread, partially wrapping the end of the fitting while not covering the opening. Be sure to wrap the entire thread as it will reduce any risk of it seizing or galling. Step 3

Step 3: Next, you need to maintain tension on the tape to make sure it is securely wrapping around the threads, forming into the thread profile. When you wrap the tape 3-5 revolutions, overlapping the tape, you will work gradually away from the end of the thread to completely cover the threads.

Step 4: Once you have finished wrapping the threads, hold the tape with thumb and forefinger. You can then pull it quickly, ripping the tape from the spool. Smooth out the loose end of the tape over the threads, making sure nothing is sticking up or bunched together.

Step 5: Now that the threads are properly wrapped and there is no bunching or tape sticking out, you can thread the pipe into the fitting.

The Chemical Composition of PTFE Tape

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is the primary component of PTFE tape. This synthetic fluoropolymer exhibits remarkable properties, including high heat resistance, chemical inertness, low friction coefficient, and non-stick properties. These qualities make PTFE tape an ideal choice for numerous industrial and commercial applications.

01/

Understanding Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

At the heart of PTFE tape lies the polymer polytetrafluoroethylene. This polymer is composed of repeating units of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) monomers, which consist of two carbon atoms bonded to four fluorine atoms. The resulting chain-like structure gives PTFE its distinctive properties, including high heat resistance, low friction coefficient, and exceptional chemical inertness.

02/

Fluorine Content

A defining feature of PTFE tape is its high fluorine content. Fluorine atoms surround the carbon backbone of the polymer chain, forming strong carbon-fluorine bonds. These bonds are among the strongest in organic chemistry, contributing to PTFE’s remarkable chemical stability and resistance to degradation by heat, chemicals, and environmental factors.

03/

Carbon Backbone

The carbon backbone of PTFE provides structural integrity to the polymer chain. Carbon-carbon bonds within the backbone impart strength and stability to the material, allowing it to withstand mechanical stresses and maintain its properties over a wide range of temperatures.

04/

Polymerization Process

PTFE is produced through a process called polymerization, wherein TFE monomers undergo chain-growth polymerization to form the long molecular chains characteristic of the polymer. The polymerization process typically occurs under high temperature and pressure conditions, facilitated by specialized catalysts and initiators.

05/

Additives and Fillers

While the primary component of PTFE tape is polytetrafluoroethylene, manufacturers may incorporate additives and fillers to modify certain properties of the material. Common additives include pigments for coloration and lubricants to enhance the tape’s flexibility and ease of application. Fillers such as glass microspheres or graphite may be added to improve strength, conductivity, or thermal resistance in specific applications.

06/

Crosslinking

In some instances, PTFE tape may undergo crosslinking, a process that forms covalent bonds between polymer chains. Crosslinking enhances the material’s mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and resistance to deformation under load. It can be achieved through irradiation, chemical treatment, or thermal methods, depending on the desired outcome.

FAQ

Q: Is PTFE tape the same as Teflon tape?

A: PTFE tape – often referred to as “plumber's tape” or “Teflon tape” – Is a professional strength adhesive tape used in a variety of applications, usually involving ductwork or piping. You can find it in your local hardware store where it is usually sold in varying sizes, from small rolls to big spools.

Q: Where should you not use PTFE tape?

A: An important thing to remember is that PTFE tape should not be used when connecting PVC fittings or valves with a female (FPT) thread. If the tape is used on female connections, a wedging action can occur which will cause major stress on the joint during assembly. PTFE tape does not guarantee a leak free connection.

Q: When should you use PTFE tape?

A: You can use PTFE tape anywhere there is a compression joint between two sections of pipe. Compression joints on brand new pipe work should be fine without PTFE tape, but older pipework is more likely to weep when things are moved around, i.e. you are changing a radiator over.

Q: What is another name for PTFE tape?

A: Thread seal tape (also known as PTFE tape, Teflon tape, or plumber's tape) is a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film tape commonly used in plumbing for sealing pipe threads. The tape is sold cut to specific widths and wound on a spool, making it easy to wind around pipe threads.

Q: Do you have to remove old PTFE tape?

A: PTFE tape is considered a single use item, and should usually last many years. However If you unthread the fitting for any reason, you will need to remove the used tape and reapply a new wrapping.

Q: What do plumbers use instead of PTFE tape?

A: Pipe joint compounds (also known as pipe dope or pipe glue) can be used instead of PTFE tape. However, it should be noted that these alternatives typically have higher strength than tape so are ideally suited as permanent seals rather than temporary solutions.

Q: Can you use too much PTFE tape?

A: However, if improperly applied, then yes, it can cause leaks. The most common mistake is to use too much tape. A too-thick application of tape in the joint can prevent full tightening of the threaded joint; a leak results. Two wraps of tape around the male pipe thread will be enough if the thread has not been damaged.

Q: How long will PTFE tape last?

A: When stored in normal warehouse conditions, all PTFE and Rulon materials have an unlimited shelf life. In fact, a common industry joke is that, at 85 years and counting, PTFE has “not been around long enough” to determine how long it will last!

Q: What dissolves PTFE tape?

A: The chemical resistance of PTFE is outstanding, there are no solvents which could dissolve PTFE at room temperature and the surface of PTFE at room temperature is affected only by molten alkali and fluorine in some cases.

Q: What is equivalent to PTFE tape?

A: UHMW tape can be used in place of PTFE tape for sealing control surface gaps and reducing friction caused by the Mylar sliding over the control surface.

Q: Do plumbers still use PTFE tape?

A: Using PTFE tape for gas pipe sealer applications is common, but it is vital to select the right product for the job. Gas-rated PTFE thread seal tape is widely available, but it tends to be thicker and denser than standard PTFE tape for use in liquid plumbing environments.

Q: When not to use PTFE tape?

A: Teflon tape is recommended for brass fittings except for when it comes with a rubber gasket. Also, never use Teflon tape under brass's compression nut flare threads or any other compression fitting type. Also, if you're using another type of threading sealant, like pipe dope compound, never use it with Teflon tape.

Q: Can you use plumbers Mate instead of PTFE tape?

A: They serve totally different purposes. Plumber putty to fill small gaps under faucet. Teflon tape or liquid is for sealing threaded connections that do not have o - ring or washer. You never use "teflon" tape where putty goes, and you never use putty where teflon tape goes.
