Waterproof Sealing Tape
If your pipe’s joints are leaking, it’s probably either because the connection between them has loosened or the tape or putty sealing the connection has worn out. This is common for older pipes. Waterproof sealing tape can help with both of these problems. If you identify that your leak is coming from a joint, then waterproof sealing tape is your answer.

PTFE Tape Uses
Understanding what PTFE tape is used for is important. While there are several potential applications for tape, the suitability ultimately depends on the specific requirements of the task.
PTFE tape is commonly known as a thread sealant, and many types help minimize leakage around certain types of joints. Different thicknesses can be chosen to provide an extra barrier against leaks in ducting systems. These tapes often have naturally expansive properties, allowing them to fill small gaps between threads and conduits once wrapped around the inside of a threaded joint.
Common PTFE tape uses include
Leakage prevention
Using plumber's tape to prevent leaks has long been a common practice. It is mainly used as a preventive measure when connecting joints. Wrapping PTFE tape around the threads of a male fitting before assembly helps seal and tighten the joint from the inside, offering added protection against future leakage.
PTFE tape can also serve as a temporary fix for plumbing leaks until proper repairs are made. In such cases, it is generally applied to the outside of the joint to help reduce leakage. However, it is not intended as a permanent solution for damaged, worn, or improperly fitted joints.
Gas
PTFE tape is also widely used as a sealant for gas pipes, but it is crucial to choose the correct type for this application. Gas-rated PTFE thread seal tape is commonly available and is typically thicker and denser than standard PTFE tape used for liquid plumbing. Standard (thinner) tape can degrade or allow gas to leak if used improperly in gas systems, as it is usually more porous due to being stretched during manufacturing. Gas-rated tapes are designed to handle the demands of natural gas pipeline connections.
Petrol and Oil
Thanks to its chemical resistance, PTFE tape is also suitable for use with petrol and oil. It is often used in automotive applications to seal and lubricate fuel line joints.
Plumber's sealing and lubricating tape is designed to withstand moderately high levels of pressure and heat. This makes it generally suitable for environments where it may come into contact with oil, petrol, diesel, and other fuels.
As with most PTFE tape applications, it is good practice to start wrapping just below the first thread, leaving one full thread exposed at the end of the male fitting. This helps prevent small fragments of tape-sheared off during tightening-from entering and potentially contaminating fuel tanks or pipelines. If needed, you can start wrapping a bit further back to reduce this risk.
